Former NFL MVP Cam Newton has signed a multi-year, multi-million-dollar contract with ESPN, cementing his place as a regular voice on First Take alongside Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim.

Newton, who previously appeared on the show weekly, will now feature multiple times a week. His expanded role kicked off during ESPN’s HBCU Tour broadcast at Norfolk State University on August 28.

While ESPN hasn’t released official figures, industry chatter suggests Newton’s deal is worth around $2 million annually.

Executives called Newton a “unique talent” with authenticity and charisma, while Newton said he’s eager to “connect with fans and bring passion and knowledge to the show.”

The move follows Shannon Sharpe’s departure from First Take and has sparked mixed fan reactions—some celebrating Newton’s energy and others skeptical about the fit.

Since retiring from football, Newton has built a strong media presence with his podcasts 4th & 1 and Funky Friday, and continues to spotlight HBCU athletics. His ESPN deal signals his full leap from the gridiron to media stardom.

Cam Newton’s new multi-year ESPN contract marks a major milestone in his transition from NFL superstar to impactful media personality. With a more frequent presence on First Take, he brings charisma, insight, and energy.  These key elements promise to make ESPN even more dynamic, than it already is. The proof is in the pudding and it will show in the ratings whether viewers embrace his larger role.
