Former Alabama Star Faces Capital Murder Trial in Death of Jamea Harris

More than two years after a fatal night shook Tuscaloosa, former Alabama basketball player Darius Miles is finally set to stand trial. Jury selection is scheduled to begin Dec. 1 in Alabama Circuit Court, where Miles will answer to a capital murder charge stemming from the January 2023 shooting death of 23-year-old Jamea Harris.

Miles, now 23, is accused of supplying the gun used by his childhood friend Michael Davis, who was convicted earlier this year of capital murder and sentenced to life without parole. Prosecutors say Davis fired into Harris’ Jeep during a chaotic confrontation with Harris’ boyfriend, Cedric Johnson. A single bullet killed Harris as she sat in the front passenger seat an act that under Alabama law automatically elevates a homicide to capital murder. Davis is appealing his conviction.

At Davis’ trial, defense lawyers argued he fired in self-defense. Miles, meanwhile, has remained in the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond since the night of the shooting, when he was immediately dismissed from the Crimson Tide roster. The state has already taken the death penalty off the table, but Miles still faces the prospect of spending the rest of his life behind bars if convicted.

The case has become a flashpoint in Alabama, forcing uncomfortable questions about guns, accountability, and the culture surrounding big-time college sports. As the December trial date approaches, Harris’ family — and the broader community are left waiting for another measure of justice.
